At the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, members of the Power Up coalition are calling for investment and policy action supporting energy access.
More than a dozen coalition members are hosting, speaking at, or attending events during the international gathering. The summit has attracted heads of state from across the continent and is taking place alongside the UN-organised Africa Climate Week.
Power Up is backing African calls for wealthy nations to increase overall investment in climate adaptation, and to ensure support for access to clean energy is at the heart of adaptation efforts. Doing so will strengthen communities facing climate crisis and build a platform for sustainable growth and development.
The importance of renewable energy to climate efforts was signalled by Kenyan president William Ruto in his opening speech. “The possibilities are not just promising; they are transformative,” he said.
This year the Power Up campaign launched Power Up Kenya, an initiative to support adaptation and energy access in summit’s host nation. Its original policy recommendations show actions that can deliver community resilience, new jobs, and other benefits across the country.
